microONE and Friends lecture series – 1
A Short introduction to x-ray fluorescence imaging by Dr Theresa Staufer
We are excited to announce the start of the microONE & Friends lecture series. The first lecturer is Dr. Theresa Staufer who has gladly accepted to give her lecture on a topic “A short introduction to X-Ray Fluorescence Imaging”. She is a distinguished scientist working at the Laboratory of Experimental Physics at the University of Hamburg and is leading a laboratory where she and her team further advance the imaging technology since 2020. Her primary research area is deeply rooted in medical imaging pilot research. Since 2017, she has remarkably contributed to the organization of the laser laboratory by developing new laser diagnostics.
Here is a brief description of the talk on how XFI could help to detect micro particles:
“X-ray fluorescence imaging (XFI) is a promising candidate for a non-invasive method to assess the incorporated plastic content in larger objects, given that the particles have been labelled with metallic nanoparticles or molecular contrast agents. XFI can allow in the future the multi-tracking of different plastic particle sizes in one and the same animal, hence also reducing the number of test animals. Due to the fact that the XFI-markers do not decay over time, longitudinal studies with the goal to determine the biodistribution and potential accumulation sites with associated inflammations of micro- and nanoplastics in organisms are feasible.
